Dr. Judy Downs has over 25 years of experience in the veterinary field and she enjoys working closely with her patients and clients to help with animal behavior issues. While Dr. Downs is not a certified pet behaviorist, she has relationships with other behaviorists in the area and can refer you, if desired. It is important to note that behavior appointments are priced and scheduled differently from regular health appointments, so when you call to schedule your visit, please specify that your needs are behavioral.
What To Expect
Dr. Downs provides behavior appointments that are over one hour in length, allowing for plenty of time to discuss your pet’s needs. Examples of some questions that may be asked at this time include:
- What kinds of behavior is the pet exhibiting?
- Has the pet recently gone through a life change?
- Are they a recent addition to the family?
- Have you recently moved?
- Is there a new baby in the household?
- Who lives with the pet?
- What kind of lifestyle does the pet lead?
- Who cares for the pet?
- What is the pet’s day-to-day life like?
- …and more
Dr. Downs will discuss your concerns with you by going through a complete checklist to identify the root cause of your pet’s behavioral issues. She can provide training tips, handouts, and more to help. Behavioral intervention is often a lengthy process that involves several weeks of contact and training, along with follow up rechecks to achieve results.
In the event that your pet needs more care, we can provide referrals to other behaviorists, in addition to a large amount of resources for your information. Fairfax County can also provide a number of wonderful training resources, including obedience classes with crate training, leash walking, and access to lots of exceptional trainers.
Contact us if you have questions about your pet’s needs. We’ll be happy to help you!
